The Bakat are one of many indigenous cultures of Lake Toba. Their traditions, language, and architecture are still alive and strong today.
These are traditional Batak houses. The styles, colors, and arrangements all have deep cultural and practical meaning, handed down and preserved over generations.
Each house serves a different purpose. Some are gathering places. Some house village leaders and others are for storage for crafts. A tree is planted at the end of the row of houses. Any visitor can know the age of the village by seeing the size of the tree.
These types of houses are still found today, by tourism offices, as well was farmers and villagers in the area.
