In sports, the team with the most points wins the game. So, is concentrating on scoring as many points as possible the best strategy? No. You also need to keep the other team from scoring points. That’s why you never see a 1-1-8 formation in soccer. That’s why an ice hockey team never starts a game by pulling the goalie. Points-for need to be balanced with points-against.
Finding that perfect balance is what wins not just the game but the championship.
Our current measure for economic growth (GDP) is like points on the board. Economists, CEOs and the politicians infatuated with them love to talk about how many GDP points we've scored, quarter after quarter, year after year. But what about points against? They have been piling up for decades.
A more balanced strategy that incorporates a strong defense is needed.
WE ALL WANT TO WIN! Our current economic model surely has put many points on the board.
We may have won a few games, but the goals against are piling up as well.
This is not the strategy needed for the championship.
