We have started touring the Toba Caldera Geopark area with staff from the Tourism Board of North Sumatra. It is a huge area. The lake is 100 km long and at least 30 km wide.
We visited many sites, including a the final disposal site (landfill), and had many in-depth conversations about the current waste management issues and their concerns for the future.
The mountains and valleys surrounding the lake are rich in culture, beautiful landscapes, and breath-taking geological formations.
Waste is also an ever increasing problem. Thankfully, local residents, businesses and government officials are aware of the growing issues and motivated to make changes.
We hope to formulate a project to protect the area from plastic pollution and help strengthen communities to promote social and environmental resilience!
